This is very interesting to watch. Going Populist? Dems Put GOP On Spot Over Tax Benefits For The Super-Rich. The Republicans have been absolutely adamant — to the point of holding the country hostage — about refusing any sort of taxes in looking for a budget solution. So the Democrats are finally hitting back:
The Democrats’ response, from the rank and file up to President Obama, has been a political twofer. If Republicans are taking all taxes off the table, then they’re playing reverse Robin Hood — demanding trillions in cuts to social programs while refusing to budge on preferences to unfathomably wealthy special interests. It’s class war, but in tactical sense. If they can make the GOP feel so uncomfortable that they agree to end special tax favors for the ultra-wealthy — even if those favors don’t ultimately cost that much money — then maybe they can break the anti-tax firewall and encroach on $400 billion.
It’s brilliant. I hope they stick to their guns and make it work. The article goes on to list several boondoggles the Republicans are so tenaciously defending — among them ridiculous writeoffs if you own a jet, a yacht, a racing horse or two, and so on. They also target benefits the outrageously profitable oil companies get to pile on top of their loot, and the “hedge fund loophole” — both of which would actually make significant dents both in revenue and in the mindset that deems these sort of things to be healthy for the country.
Add in watching Obama scold Congress for taking so much time off the other day. Yep, that’s a spine or two poking through. Keep it up!
