Not that I think there’s anyone on my regular reading list who hasn’t long since signed this petition, but just in case, and pass it around again, wouldja? I Stand With Planned Parenthood

I would laugh, if I weren’t fucking stuck in this country that does allow Fox to operate: Regulators Reject Proposal That Would Bring Fox-Style News to Canada. What’s the Canadian law that keeps Fox from operating north of the US? One that forbids lying on broadcast news.. Have you got that? Basically, Fox News can operate in the U.S. BECAUSE WE ALLOW LYING ON THE BROADCAST NEWS. I cannot stress that enough. I’ve said it before but this case makes it absolutely crystal clear that Fox News IS NOT A LEGITIMATE NEWS OUTLET BECAUSE IT IS BASED ON LIES. I quote:

As America’s middle class battles for its survival on the Wisconsin barricades — against various Koch Oil surrogates and the corporate toadies at Fox News — fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice can take comfort from a significant victory north of Wisconsin border. Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canada regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada’s right wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.

Canada’s Radio Act requires that “a licenser may not broadcast….any false or misleading news.” The provision has kept Fox News and right wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the “Fairness Doctrine” in 1987. Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the U.S. airwaves.

This just brings up so many levels of insanity, I don’t know where to start. Reagan unleashed so much damage to this country; I’m constantly amazed by how many issues today have a beginning in his tenure. I say we bring back the Fairness Doctrine, stat! Fox can operate as much as it likes, as long as it stops lying! (Some background on the FD and what it means: How We Lost it, and Why We Need it Back.)

Who among us hasn’t shared YouTube links by now? Shoot, I do so nightly at the very least. But the US Government seems to think this should be illegal. We’ve been down this road before, with mind-numbingly ignorant-of-the-internet (really? still?? in 2011???) politicians jumping on the bandwagon. So here’s another petition. Go forth and sign: Share a YouTube Video? Go to Jail. On examination, it looks to me like the sports industry is trying to pull something of an RIAA, on even more flimsy grounds. This is the official description of the arrest: Agents Arrest Alleged Streaming Website Operator Bryan McCarthy. Problem? What McCarthy was doing was providing people with the ability to search through & discover links to other sites with streaming content (primarily sports events). What does that sound like? That sounds like… well that sounds rather like a Google for sports events, doesn’t it?

We really have to clear up copyright, intellectual property, net neutrality and all of this stuff online, before we discover the government’s shut it all down, lock, stock, and barrel and is making us pay for the useless leftover dribbles.

And how about that Huckabee? Well, really Dan Savage sufficiently skewered Huckabee so I don’t have to. But, indeed: if Natalie Portman, then why not Bristol Palin? Idiot. Pandering idiot. Actually, Huckabee has been giving Savage a fair amount of material to work with as you can see here and here. (My condolences on that last one — I had to scrub my brain out with bleach as well. I’d say the mere thought of Huckabee horizontal is the best reason to outlaw marriage altogether.) Salon also takes note: What the Huck?
